Lukas Berger
Biography
Lukas Berger joined FLOW as Associate Professor in January 2026. He obtained his PhD in Mechanical Engineering at RWTH Aachen University, Germany. He has been a group leader at the Institute for Combustion Technology at RWTH Aachen University for three years and subsequently worked for three years in industry at MTU Aero Engines AG to develop a fuel cell-based propulsion system for aviation.
His research focuses on sustainable propulsion and clean energy technologies, targeting both fundamental and application-oriented questions. He is investigating the deployment of renewable fuels, such as hydrogen, ammonia, and sustainable aviation fuels to decarbonize hard-to-abate sectors like aviation, maritime applications, heavy-duty trucking, and industrial burners for high-temperature processes. In addition to advanced combustion technologies, his field of expertise also comprises the development of fuel cell-related technologies. His research interests encompass direct numerical simulations and large-eddy simulations of reacting turbulent and laminar flows, physics-based and data-driven modelling approaches, high performance computing methods, and multiphase flows in porous media.
