Thomas Haas
Biography
Since late 2024, Thomas works as a postdoctoral researcher at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) under the supervision of prof. M. Runacres with a focus on Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) applied to wind energy systems.
Prior to joining VUB, Thomas worked as a postdoctoral researcher at Ghent University under the supervision of prof. J. Degroote. His research focused on advancing numerical simulations of Airborne Wind Energy Systems as part of the ETF BORNE project in collaboration with UCLouvain.
Thomas obtained his PhD in 2022 from KU Leuven, Belgium, under the supervision of prof. J. Meyers. For his dissertation, titled “Simulation of airborne wind energy systems in the atmospheric boundary layer”, he developed a simulation framework for Airborne Wind Energy Systems combining Large-eddy simulations, actuator line modelling and model predictive control. His research was performed as part of the MSCA doctoral training network AWESCO.
Thomas holds a M.Sc. degree in Engineering Sciences from the Technical University of Berlin, Germany, as well as a dual Bachelor-degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Strasbourg, France and the University of Applied Sciences of Offenburg, Germany.
